Jo was our “go to person” for any opinions om medicine generally. In addition to his specialised knowledge in Radiology he had an excellent understanding of all other aspects of medicine and could reason out the problem.
He was also my driving instructor when I was desperate to pass the driving test before starting GP training.
He always welcomed a chat and many an evening we will walk to their house and listen to stories of old times over a cup of tea and Sri Lankan snacks. We used to provide him with marshmallows which was one of his favourite sweets. Theresa had to keep a check that he didn’t finish the whole packet in one sitting!
Though a graduate from Colombo, he had a special interest in the Peradeniya Medical School. He was a life member of PEMSAA UK and contributed generously to its projects.
We were very privileged to have known Jo. We will treasure many memories, especially one of him singing to the fish in the garden pond , and a piano and a singing duet with one of my granddaughters.
May he rest in peace.
Padma and DYD.

He has also set eternity in the human heart”
Ecclesiastes 3:11
It gives me peace to share my thoughts on Dr Joseph in the midst of the loss of a great friend of Catholic schools.
He had a fire inside his heart to share the love of Jesus. He had the passion to be rooted in Christ through personal and communal worship. He was committed to the sacramental life of the Church. Dr Joseph was always so generous with his finances and time and served diligently in his vocation as a father, Doctor and believer.
He dared to dream; a unified life amongst Tamils, he actively engaged with the congregation of his parish and community. He promoted liturgical singing and aspired to great things for the young lives in Jaffna and daringly supported all who crossed his path.
So much to celebrate!
Dr Joseph had the aptitude to be a Catholic with the courage and strength to encourage those with leadership qualities to pursue their visions. He also had a disciple’s mentality to listen with discernment and would support initiatives to grow.
The disciplined life of a disciple and a desire to learn took him to study a master’s degree in theology at St Mary’s University in Twickenham.
Dr Joseph has truly lived as a great witness and leader, seated at the foot of the cross, hearing the Truth, and faithfully serving to all around him.
He joins the Saints and Church fathers who have planned the eternity while on earth. He embraced death like a friend eagerly awaiting the paradise promised by his Father.
“Such are the men who seek your face O Lord.” Psalm 24: 6
As a Member, I also echo the sentiments of the past pupils association of Ilavalai Convent School. Dr Joseph understood our enthusiasm and accompanied us with his admiration. Dr Joseph had the skill of gathering people together during events; he used to buy a large percentage of the raffle tickets in events hosted by alumni associations, and he had the childlike wonder and awe when he won a prize.
We shall miss Dr Joseph in our gatherings.
He had the winning ticket!
Grant O Lord, Eternal Rest.

Joe lived a full life was a loving husband, devoted father, doting Grandfather, beloved brother/brother-in-law, loyal friend, and a healing Physician to the sick and afflicted. Joe was blessed abundantly, was a loving, caring, generous man who was fun to be with.
Sidney and I have known Joe and Theresa for over 6 decades in the UK. They graced all major life celebrations of our family travelling to Winchester including the marriages of our 2 daughters. Prior to this Joe & Theresa were friends of my family in Sri Lanka “The Muttiah’s” for many years.
Joe’s contribution to radiology and ultrasound in the UK has been outstanding. He was physician, teacher, research scientist and innovator.
4 events stand out in our association with Joe & Theresa.
Joe was founder member with the late Sister Josephine and Mrs. Andradi of the Holy Family convent past pupils’ association in the UK. He fostered, encouraged, and gave generously of his time as these were early days of the association.
When my brother Tyrrell had surgery on the 18th of September 1979 at St. George's hospital London all the family had gathered outside the theatre to be given the devastating news that my beloved brother aged 42 had succumbed during surgery. Joe was with us at that time of inconsolable pain, grief and utter devastation. He just sat with us, wept with us and consoled us.
On a happier note, we had the great joy of travelling with Joe and Teresa for our dear friend Kumar and Loretta 's daughter Shanika’s wedding in France in 2012. The four of us travelled by Eurostar and had a most enjoyable time reminiscing about the past, savouring the present and looking into the future. We spent four memorable days together.
Joe’s work on equality, diversity and inclusivity is well known to many and he wrote widely on these issues. In 2000 I was working with the Chief Medical Officer Professor Sir Liam Donaldson on these issues. Sir Liam was keen to meet a few doctors from ethnic minority communities who had views on the subject. I invited Joe, Shanti Soysa and Jerry Vive to attend the dinner Sir Liam hosted for us at Richmond House. Joe with his wide knowledge and experience made a significant contribution which moved forward this agenda at a time it was not widely recognised or accepted.
It is a sad time indeed when we say goodbye to a dear, loving friend until we meet again. It is fitting to say that Joe will be greeted by the words
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord” Matthew 25:21

He was the mentor to all the Presidents who succeeded him, and an inspiration to the rest of us who served in the Committee.
We all say, we are proud to be called Patricians. But, in Dr Joe’s case, St Patrick’s is very proud of him.
Whatever the key decision was to be agreed, he would say “Only the Best for St Patrick’s”.
His generosity and contribution to his Alma Mater and to the Alumni Association has been profound.
He was an outstanding professional, and exceptionally talented in many other areas including singing, sports and community activities. He was simply outstanding in everything he did. He never lost sight of the minor details including attendance and being punctual for everything.
He was not only an authentic listener - he inspired everyone to listen and acknowledge others.
We will miss his carol singing, editing our news letters and articles, trips to the meetings and meeting socially for years to come.
My wife, Shiranee and I thank you Theresa Acca, Manik, Rukshi and all family members for supporting Joe Annan for his generosity to St Patrick’s College

They (Theresa and Joseph) were clever students.Joseph was fun-loving and a good entertainer. As a medical student and later as a doctor, he was good at imitating our teachers and colleagues
I particularly remember and wish to share something Joe did as a junior doctor. When he finished his internship (pre-registration training), he opted to take up the post of 'blood bank medical officer at rthe Jaffna Hospital.
It is well known that there was always a shortage of blood for transfusion at the Jaffna Hospital.
Joe started a campaign for the public to donate blood for transfusion. He established mobile venesection and blood collection at schools , markets and public functions. It was something novel (campaigning for voluntary blood donation)--typical of Anton's ways.
I am aware of his great interest and contributions to his school (St Patrick's College in Jaffna).
About 15 of our batchmates were working or undergoing postgraduate training in the UK or in London in 70s and 80s.
Theresa and Joseph very kindly arranged a get together and lunch for their batchmates in their house and grand garden at their former residence, also in Wallington.
It became an annual event, thereafter, hosted at some of our other batchmates residences and later at a restaurant. He would make it a point to attend these get togethers, inspite of increasing disabilities.
May His Soul Rest in Peace

As a colleague, his incredible work ethic, and his in-depth knowledge in the field of abdominal ultrasound, was a constant source of inspiration for me and my colleagues. But even more than that, it was his teaching and interpersonal skills that made him stand out, and that will always be remembered with respect and admiration. His passion for his subject, and his passion for sharing his knowledge, helped CUH to be named by Kings College registrars as “the best place to train in Radiology” during their rotations. And I had to smile, even during busy radiology lists, when his distinctive voice would boom over the Tannoy or he would send an RDA to our reporting offices, because he wanted to "share an interesting case” with us!
He was a natural teacher and very much an old school type of great consultant – not only giving his time to teach them well, but also taking his trainees out for meals, inviting them home and being genuinely interested in their lives outside of medicine. I always sent any work-experience students to join his sessions, because I knew that his great experience, knowledge and conversation would leave a mark and inspire. I too enjoyed many long conversations with him about our shared roots and mutual friends from Sri Lanka. And I always enjoyed and valued his visits, when he would “pop in”, even after reluctantly retiring as a consultant at the age of 80, for a chat and a shared bag of Branston Pickle Mini Cheddars!
Even though his last few years were marred by health issues, his indomitable spirit and zest for life remained undiminished. He was, and always will be, a source of inspiration to me personally and to all the staff who worked with him at CUH. My heartfelt condolences to Theresa and his loving family. He burned brightly whilst he was on this earth, made his mark as a doctor and a man, and will live long in our hearts and in our minds.

I knew Jo in the early years in UK, only as very eminent Radiologist consultant and heard how he was ready to help whoever goes to him with any medical problem.
Our family friendship started after he joined as a committee member in Jaffna Holy Family Convent Past Pupil association Uk. I used to give lift to the meeting and I came to know him well. He was a wise man who was spiritually deep and emotionally intelligent. If I have to describe him as a person I would say, he was dignified intelligent humble hardworking empathetic loving generous loyal just brave kind and caring. He would treat everybody the same and never expected anything in return. He continued to show these qualities until his last days. He entertained everyone around him with his jokes. He took pride when he talked about all his grandchildren and their achievements.
The love he had for Teresa Acca reflected well the way he looked after her patiently after her illness. He was very patient with her and was very concerned about her I would like to write a quote from the Bible
Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous Love is never boastful or conceited. It is never rude or selfish. It doesn’t take offense and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other people’s sins. But delights in the truth. It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and endure whatever comes.
Jo having lived a meaningful life; and, shedding his worn- out body, his spirit soars to greater heights unto the loving care of God. We will miss him very much in our midst.
My heartfelt condolences to the family and pray to God to give you all the strength in this difficult times.

Dr. Arulraj always brings a special form of lively discourse in every gathering that usually ends with him singing of the Tamil hymn Viyakula Mamamariye in his distinctive and strikingly sonorous voice.
At every gathering Arulraj always raised a theological question to test and see whether my answer confirms his and he will see to it that at least at the surface level our disputations contradict that of his dear friend and close relative Ivan Pedropillai.
In retrospect, how much I love and cherish those lovely times of endless debates and "spirited" discussions with crystal glasses in our hands.
This was one Tamil family where intra-family dynamics were always graceful, exemplary, transparent and glaringly visible. In addition to his medical contributions and intellectual life, the legacy of faith, friendship and fellowship Dr. Arulraj leaves behind is staggeringly enormous and beautiful. He will be remembered for centuries. May God grant him Eternal Rest.

Message: Jo Joseph - yes he is lovely man…worked after his retirement from St George’s as a radiologist at CUH and we may all remember that he was famous for his ultrasound expertise in bowel pathology and used to make all these unexpected and weird but often correct diagnoses on ultrasound when others needed a CT scan to make the diagnosis. As a tennis club member, he will be remembered for the passionate conversations we used to have over coffee - when his views were always right and we are wrong if our views diverged!!!
First past member of the tennis club to pass away - May god bless his soul and to those who believe and as we say in our culture - we belong to God, and to him we return!!!

Message: I have known Jo for approximately 40years,initially as a professional colleague at St George's Hospital, where his skill in the field of Ultrasound was legendary.
I have also known him as a patient when he carried out repeated Ultrasounds to monitor a fatty liver following a bout of Non Specific Hepatitis. He always put patients at ease and fully explained his findings, inspiring great confidence.
Finally,I have known him as a Family Member, when his son Manik married my daughter Jane. How they met is an amusing story.
Stopping at a Birmingham Service Station, on the way up to the University of Manchester to settle Jane into her first term,I found myself standing at an adjacent toilet to Jo. On inquiring why he was there, he replied that he was taking his daughter Rukshi to Manchester to begin her Medical Studies. Consequently, introductions were made and the rest is History
Since that auspicious day, we have met many times as Family Members.
My memories of him are of a Multitalented man with a superb brain which was always being used in so many areas too numerous to mention.
He will be sorely missed and always remembered as a truly outstanding Sri Lankan.

Message: While many have recognized the numerous extraordinary qualities of Dr. Joseph, I would like to highlight one of his talents and accomplishments that have not been touched upon so far. Dr. Joseph was a left handed Tennis player with a vicious cross court forehand that always created trouble for his opponents. Together with his partner S. Gnapragasam, they were a formidable doubles team in the Tennis circuit in Northern Sri Lanka in the 1960's. Their general strategy was a vicious cross court forehand to the opponent’s backhand by Dr. Joseph and Gnapragasam at the net trying to finish off the point. In other words, Dr. Joseph was the creator and Gnapragasam was the finisher. They were always one of the seeded pairs in the North Ceylon Tennis Tournament and Jaffna Fort Club Tennis Tournament, two of the major tournaments in Jaffna. In addition to tennis, Dr. Joseph was also an excellent Table Tennis player. Again, his left handed cross court shots were his weapon and he was the North Ceylon Table Tennis Champion for multiple years.
As a youngster I had the opportunity to experience the generosity and concern Dr. Joseph had for others first hand, on the tennis court. My father who was also an avid tennis player, collapsed on the tennis court with severe cramps after a marathon match during the North Ceylon Tournament. Dr. Joseph rushed to court, loaded my father into his car, took him to the hospital and brought him back all “fixed up”.
Dr. Joseph practiced what Jesus taught us, “ Love thy Neighbour” . May his soul rest in peace.

Message: I was saddened to hear of the death of my colleague and friend Joe. We first met when I joined him in the ultrasound department at St George’s. He could not have been more kind, helpful or welcoming, and we became firm friends. When time allowed we would pop round the corner for a curry where Joe’s ‘special’ dish (not actually on the menu) was always prepared for him.
After retiring from St George’s, he continued to practise at Mayday until the incredible age of 80. His ultrasound skills were legendary, and his teaching superb and unforgettable. A huge number of consultant radiologist in the UK have him to thank for their professional expertise When we met again last year he was undiminished, lively, and full of stories and memories, even at 85.
He was a man of enthusiasms: for Theresa and his family of course, but more widely for his work, the church, friends, his Alma Mater, singing and his garden, which is probably not even a complete list. In that respect he was a man much blessed. He will be fondly remembered by everyone who worked with him and were privileged to be his friend.

Message: It is a sad moment for our College St Patrick’s Jaffna, the passing away of Dr Arulraj Joseph, affectionately known to many as Dr.. Joe.
Probably the only Patrician I can think of who lived and breathed helping the Alma Mater for over 40 years.
He founded the OBA in London in 1983 and was unanimously elected President. His passion has since inspired many old boys to follow him and help our Alma Mater from the UK. Today the UK OBA stands as one of the leading Alumni of our College around the world.
He attended almost all the Executive Council meetings until his deteriorating health made him housebound in the last few years.
As one of the past Presidents of the UK Alumni, I have seen him many times getting advice and help with many projects. He never hesitated to donate when it comes to college affairs.
May his dream of seeing Greater St. Patrick's College Jaffna live forever and enable many Patricians around the world to follow his vision.
May the good Lord grant him eternal rest.
Thanking you.
Kind regards

Message: We are deeply saddened at the demise of dear Dr. Arulrajah Joseph. He was an exceptional leader, his wealth of talent would've excelled in any field. He was my mentor and I always admired his steady style, professionalism, and his sense of humor. These qualities made it easier for him to deal with even the most challenging issues.
His focus on research was balanced by his love of his profession.
He exemplified all that we hold dear as a community, especially his Patriotism to his beloved Alma Mater, and his impact on the Alumni Association in the United Kingdom will be felt for many more years to come. He was instrumental in setting up the Perpetual Trust Fund and gaining the Charity status for the St Patrick's College Jaffna, Alumni Association, in the United Kingdom. The Board of Executive Committee members, past and present, will miss him including myself, his stalwart contribution to his beloved Alma Mater and her welfare.

As a fellow Patrician and EXCO member of SPC UK AA, Dr Joseph helped me with the launch of our annual of Christmas brochures for the last 12 years as an Honorary Editor. He wrote an article about his teachers at St Patrick’s College back in 2012 quoting “The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes you and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called “truth.” This quote still resonates with me as he was a teacher and guider. Message: Tribute to Dr Anton Joseph
Dr Anton Joseph, fondly known as ‘Joe Joseph’ among his Catenian friends, especially the Sutton Mid-Surrey Circle of The Catenian Asociation to which he belonged. Joe joined our Circle rather late in life. He was recruited into our circle by his wife Theresa’s efforts. If I remember correctly, he had retired from full-time employment with the NHS, but continued to work as a Consultant Radiologist at Croydon University Hospital. Theresa observed very large gatherings at Catenian funerals at their local parish church of St Elphege’s, Wallington, and decided that she would like a similar farewell for her beloved husband when the time arrived. Theresa therefore took the initiative of contacting one of our circle Brothers via her Parish Priest. Joe was duly installed as a Catenian Brother of Sutton Mid-Surrey Circle. He attended our own circle meetings very regularly and was always enthusiastic about visiting neighbouring circles.
I was one of the Catenian brothers who used to offer him a lift to these events, both at our own circle and when visiting other neighbouring circles. He particularly enjoyed riding in my AMG car which he referred to as a ‘pocket rocket’ and claimed that he had previously experienced a similar thrust only when he and Theresa had flown on one of the Concord maiden flights from London Heathrow airport to New York. He was disappointed on the occasion of our last visit to a Catenian event because I had sold my AMG car during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Most Sri Lankan stalwarts I have known during the past fifty years, hailed from the Jaffna Peninsula, Joe being one of them. I have thoroughly enjoyed his exhilarating company with many anecdotes from his illustrious medical career, including from his early life as a Forensic Pathologist.
Joe also entertained us at Catenian Christmas parties with his beautiful tenor voice. He will be very dearly missed by all his Catenian friends.
May the Lord grant him eternal rest and let perpetual light shine upon Brother Joe Joseph. Our thoughts and prayers also for Theresa, Manik & Jane, Rukshi & Harry and the grandchildren, Maya, Stefan, Jess & Ben.

He was extremely passionate about his work and earned lots of accolades from his trainees. He was by far the best ultrasonologist I have known with an in depth knowledge and could diagnose conditions on ultrasound that others may not have picked up. He was a pioneer in Ultrasonography and its multiple applications. His greatest virtue was to try to connect physiology and biology with his diagnosis.
I had the fortune of visiting his house and on a couple of occasions. His passion in gardening was evident in the immaculate garden they maintained-as beautiful as a show garden.
I will miss my profound discussions with him on various topics outside of medicine. He was a prolific writer and had research articles in various journals.
Jo will be deeply missed and I express my heartfelt condolences to his family. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.

Message: It is with great sadness I am writing this message bidding farewell to one of the greatest Srilankans, I have ever known. A true legend in every aspect. As a Patrician I admired his commitment to our Alma Mater. He was our founder President of the Alumni Association UK and supported the Ex Co right the way through till his last breadth. He has also supported the college financially over the years along with support to other favourite charities. As a fellow medic I appreciated the contribution he has made to Radiology in the UK as a Clinician, Researcher and a Teacher at Prestigious St. George’s University Hospital in South London. He was a pioneer in Ultra Sound Technology as a diagnostic tool. He was extremely well respected by the Medical Fraternity not only in the UK but around the globe. His writings and singing are legendary. After all he was a Chorister. His carol singing at our SPC dinners were amazing and will ring in our ears for years to come. We will miss him this year and beyond.
He loved satire and always encouraged me with my stand- up routines. I kept in touch with him daily via whatsapp and kept him entertained. He appreciated that. He represented the school in Cricket and Tennis and is a true all- rounder. It is rare to find muti-talented and erudite people like him nowadays. He was a rare very precious gem!
Dr. Joe as I always fondly called him and his enormous intellect will be sorely missed by all. He is a great loss to all of us let alone Theresa acca, his children and his immediate family. RIP my friend and Mentor. I will miss you!! The Patrician community around the globe will miss you. But I will always remember you in my quiet moments. You have left an indelible mark in my heart!!

Message: Our Tribute to Dr Joseph
He was a dear friend who linspired us with positive thoughts and confidence in most situations. He knew our family and often shared those treasured moments of acquaintances. His vast knowledge and excellent memory are beyond praise worthy. Though our living far away from London did not allow frequent visits, we were honoured with two visits to our home. This we really enjoyed and treasure those memories. He will be sadly missed but will always remain in our thoughts. We pray for his soul to find eternal happiness in the Kingdom of God to whom he served during his time in this world. May he rest in peace.

Message: Tribute to our dear Uncle Dr. Joseph
Words seem too feeble in moments like these. But Surely, God takes what is His, and what He gives is His. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Our hearts are still ache in sadness. You are a man like no other, if love, humility and compassion had a form in human then it was you, you are an icon worthy of emulation, a true definition of what a family should be like. You are a hero, a strong support system, a hardworking and strong individual who was always there for us.
You were selfless, lived for others, always willing to help. You stood firm for what you believed was in the general interest of everyone. You were a team maker, always there for peacekeeping and upholding family ties and friendship.
We will always remember that charming smile of yours, that caring heart, and most importantly, a valuable life lesson that ‘family is key’ and to always stay together through thick and thin, and to support, love and respect each other.
We are incredibly grateful to have us as part of your extended family. You always invited us for your birthdays, Christmas, anniversary meals etc. I can still vividly remember your surprise visit to the Hospital, where I was at the operating theatre for keyhole surgery which took 12 hours to finish. Upon opening my eyes I saw you and Uncle Ivan standing along the corridor looking for me. I couldn’t believe it, because I didn’t expect it and got teary, very emotional and that made me happy knowing you were caring.
I still remember the time you helped me with writing a letter to Bishops Lord Justin to raise funds for building a convent for Rev Sr. Wilma in Karaveddy. You inspired me to raise funds for this project, you told me “Amir you can do this project, go ahead and take the challenge”. Initially I was hesitant to take such a large project on my own. Your support and encouragement helped me to complete the project successfully. Also you donated handsomely, which I will never forget.
Whenever you have IT issues, you always trusted me. Over the last 35 years allowed me to look into your computer.
These are memories which I cannot forget. When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure. Your companionship is beyond this world and will have full of stories to tell us and keep us entertained.
Good bye Uncle until we meet again.
Lots of love from: Amir, Poova, Nichola & Matthew, Michael & Ella and Sean

Message: There are some people one comes across in life that tower above others. Dr Joseph was one of these. I joined Croydon University Hospital as a very new and green consultant in 2008 and he was one of the first people I came across.
I shall never forget his immense energy and love of teaching. He was incredibly generous with both his knowledge and his time. Eccentric and amazing, loud of voice and gentle of heart- I know that I am not alone in saying that he will be hugely missed. He has inspired and supported countless junior and senior doctors. God Bless you, Dr Joseph.

Message: Dr Joe trained me in ultrasound. To this day I do not believe I have had such a passionate and dedicated teacher. He had great character, was an excellent doctor and a caring trainer. He was the only supervisor that invited us to his home, introduced us to his family and took us out for dinner. I will remember him with fond memories.
